“Save Soil”- Sadhguru’s Story
This past July, I had the honor of meeting Sadhguru, a yogi, mystic, and visionary from India. Sadhguru has made a profound impact on the front of environmental conservation by founding the “Save Soil” movement.
Soil is the largest living system. Just a few inches of soil contains billions of organisms including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and soil fauna. Soil degradation is an existential issue because soil is the foundation of life on earth. It’s simple: without soil, there is no food. Soil supports the growth of healthy plants that can sequester carbon, mitigating the Greenhouse Gas emissions that cause climate change. Soil is also the growth medium for the nutrient-rich produce that humans and animals consume. Therefore, our health truly is rooted in the quality of our soil.
When I spoke to Sadhguru, he expressed his belief that the solution to solving climate change is to separate soil from all other environmental concerns. Some ways we can restore the health of our soil include using regenerative agriculture and organic farming. Additionally, it is essential that we stop using pesticides when we farm. Weak soil needs pesticides, but strong soil is rich enough without pesticides. Let’s restore the soil to its original glory!
“There is no enemy: every one of us is a part of the destruction so everyone should be part of the solution.” -Sadhguru
As Sadhguru emphasized, never before in human history has one person been able to make such an impact in the world. Social media is a powerful weapon that most of us wield on a daily basis. We can utilize this power in order to raise awareness about the importance of restoring our soil. That could mean starting a hashtag #SaveSoil with your friends or reposting videos from Sadhguru’s Instagram account, @consciousplanet. Sadhguru stressed the importance of using our social media platforms in order to effect change. We all need to keep the conversation going.
Imagine if our generation was able to talk about how we saved the planet. With inspirational environmental trailblazers such as Sadhguru, this dream is more likely to become reality. Thank you for reading!
